ADAS is available for more vehicles than you think

Navco International proud member of the ADAS alliance

Traffic safety is an important point of focus all around the world. With the rise of different kind of systems it’s good to have a branch-wide approach to make these ADAS system available for every vehicle.  And if we talk about ADAS let’s starts explaining were this abbreviation stands for: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, with a special focus on the word Assistance. It helps you instead of overruling.

Why Navco International is part of the ADAS Alliance.

With 60 other organisations we have a network of all market parties involved.  The goal for all of us:  We want to increase the use of ADAS systems in the Netherlands with at least 20% in de upcoming 3 years.
ADAS Covenant, which is to increase the safe use of smart driver assistance systems.

On the other hand we have a good relationship network in the European automotive industry, so it helps the alliance to spread the word and push these safety features on all car brands and models, even for commercial vehicles, buses, and industrial machines.

ADAS Alliance launched 'the ADAS Dictionary' in order to counteract the proliferation of terms associated with the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (abbreviated to ADAS). The dictionary is a list featuring a standard name, as well as a brief description of a standard term for each (commonplace) driving assistance system, and definition of the system’s operation.

Euro NCAP Definition of ADAS

In accordance with the definition of Euro NCAP (2018): ‘ADAS are driving support systems for the Assisted Driving Mode’:

  • The driver holds full responsibility but shares the control with the vehicle.
  • The vehicle and the driver share the detection of and reaction to objects and events (Object and Event Detection and Response (OEDR)).
  • The driver may not perform any secondary tasks beyond those permitted during normal driving.

The big difference towards autonomous driving is that the systems don’t interfere with the vehicle electronics. They just help the driver to optimize safety, but the driver is still responsible.

Often the OEM of the vehicles has some safety solutions that can be provides and sometimes the OEM solution is the only right solution to offer because it is to integrated in the vehicle electronics that you don’t want to offer an solution afterwards.

To get started with offering ADAS propositions the 6 easiest systems to introduce are:

Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)
Speed Assist Systems
Displays traffic signs (that the driver might miss) on a screen in the vehicle.

Lane Keep Assist (LKA)
Lane Support Systems
Makes steering adjustments or displays a warning when the driver unintentionally starts to change lane.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
Lane Support Systems
Gives a warning when the driver changes lane without signalling.

Blind Spot Warning (BSW)
Lane Support Systems
Camera in the driver's wing mirror warns by means of a light when the vehicle is being overtaken. Also with a sound, if the driver nevertheless changes lane.

Distraction recognition
Recognises when the driver is distracted and gives a warning (current systems). In 2023 when Euro NCAP introduces it, this system will tighten up the Safety ADAS systems to eliminate irritating warnings.

Rear Collision Warning (RCW)
Detection of other vehicles when reversing.
